Anaesthetic Practitioner - Southampton
*THIS ROLE REQUIRES AN ODP QUALIFICATION*
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
In order to maintain safe levels of patient care throughout any surgical or anaesthetic procedure, the practitioner must have current and adequate level of knowledge, competence, understanding and skill in the field of anaesthesia.
Key Responsibilities:
Statutory
•Comply with and ensure that CQC, CNST and other standards are met in anaesthetic practice.
•Lead the anaesthetic team to meet the requirements of quality patient care, ensuring that all peri-operative nursing care activities carried out comply with relevant legislation and Company policies and procedures.
•Ensure that all procedures performed meet individual patient needs, reflect good practice and are provided by means of appropriate equipment, within the agreed patient care pathways.
•Ensure that patients made informed decisions about their anaesthesia and that consent meets legal requirements.
•Ensure that comprehensive anaesthetic records are maintained in respect of all patients.
Record and respond to patient and medical staff complaints
•Ensure all accidents and incidents are reported to the Theatre Manager .
•Maintain accurate, timely and complete records, ensuring the safety and confidentiality of information
•Ensure that the cleanliness and hygiene of the theatre complex is maintained, adhering to infection control policies and procedures, Health and Safety policies and procedures.
•Ensure that equipment is handled correctly and maintained in a safe working order, reporting any defects to the Theatre Manager.
•Contribute to the theatre throughput to ensure productivity levels are achieved, with theatre schedules managed efficiently.
Service Provision
•Nurture effective partnerships with colleagues and other departments.
•Understand and implement company policies, procedures, Best Practice Guidelines and comply with Statutory, National Care Standards and Purchaser requirements.
•Contribute towards the development and implementation of Unit Specific Policies and procedures to suit local needs.
•Comply with all local policies and procedures.
•Operate a service that is flexible, responsive and non-discriminatory.
•Maximise workload efficiently and effectively but not compromising quality.
Managerial
•Contribute towards the quality and cost-effectiveness of the theatre department and service delivery from suppliers e.g implants or equipment and report on issues of concern.
•Participate in the effective communication within the theatre department by attending staff meetings at least on a monthly basis.
•Work closely with colleagues to establish best operating practice.
•Identify and meet individual and collective training and developmental needs.
•Assist with staff appraisals and IDPs.
•Assist with the management of the theatre budget, including control and maintenance of equipment, request of Capex, asset verification, stock control in co-operation with pharmacy and theatre stock controller, control of staff costs.
•Assist with monthly stock counts within the theatre complex.
•Participate in the process to ensure that all stock items used per patient, per procedure are accurately recorded on the patients charge sheet and accurately captured onto the Imeds stock control system.To be responsible for monitoring stock levels and the timely replenishment of stock items, to include the periodic stock check.
•Accountable for the monitoring and examination of equipment
•Undertake periodic training to update his/her knowledge, skills and competence to manage the theatre department
•To be involved in working groups/change management programmes as appropriate.
•To assist with/be responsible for assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, manage an area of responsibility within budget, work with a multi-disciplinary team.
•To manage specific theatre/speciality as designated.
•To be responsible for management of lists within designated theatre.
•To participate in the risk management strategy and ensure that all Health and Safety and COSHH requirements are met.
•To take the role of shift leader on a rotational basis.
•To collect information from patients for the patient satisfaction programme
Systems and Administration
•Participate actively in health and safety and infection control in the theatre department.
•Assist with the investigation of complaints, accidents and critical incidents in accordance with agreed procedure. Prepare reports and notify the responsible persons.
•Keep accurate statistics to meet required deadlines to the relevant internal and external bodies.
•Maintain effective overall record keeping systems. Participate in monthly audits of records with action plans to address deviations. To be responsible for maintaining accurate, timely and complete records, ensuring the safety and confidentiality of information
•Ensure that the cleanliness and hygiene of the theatre complex is maintained, adhering to infection control policies and procedures, Health and Safety policies and procedures.
•To ensure that equipment is handled correctly and maintained in a safe working order, reporting any defects to the Theatre Manager.
Professional
Maintain high standards of clinical practice and patient care by the use of clinical example.
•To ensure the implementation and monitoring of effective clinical pathways from receiving of the patient to handover to the recovery room staff.
•Participate in audits on a regular basis; regular to ensure good practice this includes SHEQ, infection control, documentation and internal audits.
•Observe Codes of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Nursing Midwifery Council and AfPP.
•Take responsibility for risk assessments in the theatre as appropriate.
•To take an active role in the clinical governance strategy
Staff Development and Training
Support the maintenance of an environment conducive to teaching and training ensuring all staff receive any necessary training and development required maintaining staff development and safe practice. Assist with induction and foundation training for all new staff as well as the mentorship programme.
•Promote and demonstrate innovative practice implementing changes as required.
•Attend mandatory training / updates annually, training in the use, maintenance, and cleaning of all equipment, .
•Assist with and participate in the annual competency based training programme for all staff working in theatre.
